Details:
Seedling Jackfruit plants in 4L bags 80cm to 1m in height supported by a 75cm bamboo cane. All Jackfruit are grown on benches in order to prevent disease. They are irrigated with filtered water to minimize the presence of any plant pathogens being introduced to the potting mix.

Jackfruit is a tropical or subtropical fruit that is eaten fresh when ripe or cooked in savory dishes when immature.

The fruit is large, weighing on average 5-15kg with the potential to weigh up to 50kg. Individual trees have been recorded producing up to 3 tons of fruit in one year. Seedling trees will produce fruit in 4 to 5 years. Seedling are grown from a parent (image of fruit below) with crisp fruit (light orange flesh). The ripe fruit has a banana/pineapple like flavor.

The tree will grow to over 10 meters in good conditions. It is an evergreen that prefers a temperature over 5 degrees, moderate watering and a neutral pH. Jackfruit can withstand moderate wind but doesn’t tolerate waterlogging.

Demand for this fruit is strong in Australia as it is used as a meat substitute for vegetarians and vegans. Production in sub tropical areas closer to the southern markets has the advantage of reducing freight costs of a fruit that is large and relatively heavy.

For the future potential of Jackfruit production in Australia see here.

Recommended spacing: 8-9m between rows and 5-6m between trees in the row ( about 208/ha).
